Gimme’ Shelter – Mercedes is at the Providence Animal Control Center

Image
Oh hello! I was found in a stolen car. Imagine! I think my owner and I were living in the car but, it didn’t work out. The car was towed and I was found inside. Thank goodness it wasn’t too hot or too cold out at the time. I am a young female kitty, about a year or so old, maybe less. It’s hard to tell since I am so small BUT, I was coming into heat, too. Thankfully, I have been spayed – no kittens for me! My name might be Mercedes but… I wasn’t found in one, LOL. I am outgoing and very friendly. If you can see me, I am still available! No phone calls please, everything is done online and we do need an application submitted and approved before scheduling a visit. We differ from other shelters by offering a one on one experience between you, our staff and the animal or Animals you’ve chosen to become a new family member! Please email provanimalcontrol@gmail.com ___ If you have general calls on adoption, call (401) 680-7591 – but it’s always better

Improving the educational climate in Rhode Island – Ed Bastia

Image
By Ed Bastia, Rhode Island Families for School Choice – Op-Ed – commentary The current government-run model of a “one size fits all” Education al system in Rhode Island is no longer working. Current Education al options in our larger urban populations are simply not servicing our students.  Attendance and graduation rates are poor, while at the same time, students are falling behind national averages in English Language Arts (ELA) Science and Math.  Yet, the Department of Education reports spending almost $2.4 Billion this year. Flying in the face of this monstrous cost, the teachers’ unions are intimating that more funding is needed to improve programs and to better reward teachers.  Currently, Rhode Island spends $19,000 on average for each pupil. How much more funding is needed?  How much longer are we, the citizens of Rhode Island, willing to wait for this purported enhancement? The General Assembly is currently reviewing six pieces of legislation that would provid

The healing arts of recovery from the despair of addiction – Richard Asinof

Image
by Richard Asinof, ConvergenceRI, contributing writer Photo: Richard Asinof, Sandy Valentine, the executive director of RICARES, and Ian Knowles, the program manager of RICARES. The recovery community in Rhode Island has been blessed with many strong leaders over the past two decades, from the late Jim Gillen and Tom Coderre to Linda Hurley , Colleen Ndoye and Abbie Knapton . The leaders have often cobbled together innovative responses to the ever-changing dynamics of the ongoing opioid epidemic – from launching the Rally4Recovery to creating a program of peer recovery coaches at hospital emergency rooms, from launching a drop-in teen center to developing a mobile van intervention in order to meet people where they are. And, the latest innovation-to-be: the launch of a pilot harm reduction center in Providence. The shape of the epidemic crisis has also morphed. What began as an epidemic stoked by unscrupulous pharmaceutical companies pushing addictive prescrip
